【Forwarded】 116 Academic Year Admissions International Master’s Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studi

The International Master’s Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (IICS) takes “Inter-Asia” as a key perspective for rethinking world history and global cultures. Bringing together scholars and research teams in cultural studies from universities across the University System of Taiwan, the program highlights their specialized research strengths.

The curriculum is organized around four major research clusters, aiming to cultivate students’ ability to critically understand contemporary sociopolitical conditions and historical-cultural contexts across Asia. Graduates will develop interdisciplinary knowledge at the forefront of contemporary humanities and social sciences, along with a broad perspective that connects local cultures with global contexts.

【Four Universities】

National Central University

Inter-Asia / Gender, Colonialism / Multiple Modernities, Post-/Cold War Decolonial Critique and Practice

Inter-Asia and gender studies focuses on the dynamic interactions among various forms of social difference, including class, race, age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, and religion. It examines how these differences and relations of power intersect and transform within constantly changing contexts.

Rather than taking knowledge production and regional theorization based on Anglo-American hegemony and narratives of moral progress as its central framework, the program seeks alternative approaches to understanding Asia. Particular attention is given to diverse forms of gender and sexuality in post-/Cold War Asian contexts, as well as their historical connections, ruptures, and co-construction with empire, colonialism, and modernity.

National Chengchi University

Innovation, Communication, and Cultural Governance

National Chengchi University currently offers several credit and degree programs related to Asian cultural studies, including the International Master’s Program in Studies of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific Studies Program.

Courses offered by NCCU under this program will focus on “Media and Cultural Governance.” Drawing on faculty expertise across multiple colleges and disciplines, the program explores topics including cultural diversity, cultural policy, cultural and creative industries, cultural heritage management, and cultural intellectual property rights.

National Tsing Hua University

Literary and Artistic Thought, Cultural Action, and Politics of Memory

National Tsing Hua University leads the research cluster “Contemporary Thought and Social Movements,” which encompasses three major areas:

  • Literary and Artistic Thought and Cultural Action

  • Contemporary Thought and Global Change

  • Asia: History, Politics, Society, and Culture

In recent years, the cluster has focused on “Memory Politics in Contemporary Taiwan,” integrating the perspectives of historical writing, cultural movements, and cultural governance to explore the forms, characteristics, and operational mechanisms of memory politics in contemporary Taiwan.

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University

Technology, Mobilities, and Environment

“Technology, Mobilities, and Environment” is a key research cluster of the Inter-Asia Program at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

From an Inter-Asia perspective, this cluster examines the historical and contemporary formation, interaction, and mutual shaping of three areas: technology and artistic practice (techne), human and more-than-human mobilities, and natural and built environments.

Applicants with backgrounds in the humanities, social sciences, arts, design, and architecture are especially welcome to apply to the NYCU cluster.
